Henri Matisse, Open Window, Collioure, 1905.
Fun fact— I did my first formal analysis on this piece.Henri Matisse is a founding member of the Fauvist movement, which, originating at the beginning of the 20th century, is known for its use of varied and brilliant colors (as seen above.) The colors Matisse uses may at first seem “off,” but they perfectly convey the atmosphere of a sunny, joyous day. The composition gets increasingly busy as the eye moves from the edge of the canvas inward; the walls of the interior are two-toned and almost drab compared to the rich impasto of the outdoor scene framed by the window. It is no doubt that, in this painting, the artist is drawn to the beauty of nature rather than the interior sphere.
